Hi I’m Velda! I am a future physician-advocate, health policy researcher, and artist—working to create a more equitable health system for all.

I recently graduated from Duke University, where I studied Public Policy and Neuroscience, driven by a belief that both individual care and systemic reform are essential to health equity. My research focuses on Medicaid, the nation’s safety net program, and how policies can expand coverage and reduce racial and ethnic disparities in care.

As an artist, I explore the human condition, particularly the strength behind caregiving, labor, and survival. My work dwells in the space between despair and hope, using visual storytelling to better understand the lives of those our systems often overlook. To me, art is another form of listening, one that helps me see patients not just through symptoms or data points, but as whole people.

Through research, advocacy, and creative expression, I’m working toward a future where every person receives the dignity and care they deserve.
